At the Players Championship, Wyndham Clark is showing he's a big threat in the important golf tournaments.

In 1979, Fuzzy Zoeller won the Masters as a newcomer, and nobody has done it since. Next month, Wyndham Clark will play at Augusta for the first time. After his great play at the Players Championship and his impressive performances in big tournaments for the past 10 months, you might think he could be the one to break the Zoeller curse.

On Friday at the Players, Clark played exceptionally well. He started with a good score and then made five birdies in six holes, getting to 14 under par and leading by five shots. Other players struggled, and Clark seemed like he was in a league of his own.

But should anyone be surprised? At the beginning of 2023, Clark was ranked 163rd in the world. However, he won the Wells Fargo tournament and showed he was a great player. He continued to impress by winning the U.S. Open and another big tournament at Pebble Beach. Clark is now ranked 5th in the world. Although he hasn't always done well in every tournament, he tends to play his best in the biggest events.

Clark didn't expect to play so well at the Players Championship. He had some difficulties before the tournament, but when it mattered, he was ready to perform. Some people compare him to Brooks Koepka because of his pattern of average results interrupted by big wins, including at major tournaments.

Clark played especially well on the front nine on Friday, making several birdies and saving pars when needed. Even when he played it safe, he made smart decisions to avoid big mistakes.

Now, with 36 holes left to play, Clark has a good chance of winning. His past successes in big tournaments show that he could add another win to his record, getting closer to being one of the best golfers in the world.
