The Spanish La Liga is back in action this weekend. Can Barcelona be a title contender this season, with its new squad? Here’s looking at what it could take Barcelona to dethrone arch rivals, and defending champion, Real Madrid.
With new recruits like Antonio Rudiger (centre-back) and Aurelien Tchouameni (defensive midfielder), Real Madrid will be looking to win back-to-back titles. Other newcomers like Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and Rodrygo will also have an opportunity to prove themselves and allow the team to rotate its starting XI.
However, after the failure to sign Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid are left with only one centre-forward, Karim Benzema. Others who could have fulfilled the role have either left (Luka Jovic) or fallen out of favour with Ancelloti (Mariano Diaz). This leaves Real Madrid vulnerable, with respect to it’s goal scoring ability.
The situation could be salvaged by Chelsea legend Eden Hazard, who has recovered from a long list of injuries which have so far hampered his performance in the club (3 goals in 3 seasons). However, if Hazard can find his spark, then Real Madrid can overcome its sole vulnerability.
Meanwhile, Barca has taken a no holds barred approach to new acquisitions. With the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen , Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Dembele (re-signed) and the potential transfer of Marcos Alonso and Bernardo Silva, Barca seem all but invincible.
Notwithstanding their financial issues, coach Xavi will be expected to deliver some title worthy performances, with a squad that has plenty of goal-scoring potential, and perhaps needs to improve only in their response to counter-attacks.
One also mustn’t forget fellow contenders, Athletico Madrid. After a lacklustre performance last season, new signings including Nahuel Molina and Axel Witsel, are expected to plug any gaps present in the squad. With consistent performances from forward Joao Felix and defender Simeone, Athletico could also be a team to watch out for.
