While Thomas Tuchel has exited the club, Chelsea’s problems have persisted. Here we assess the performance of the team in the few weeks since Graham Potter has taken over the management of the club:
Best Player: Through the teams ups and downs, Reece James has been a player that has consistently performed well. As an attacking defender Reece has often provided crucial goals for his team including the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in August. Unfortunately, he has found a place in England’s national side for the World Cup.
Best Performance: With not too many victories this season, Chelsea’s best performance remains its draw with Tottenham. Though the team fell behind in the first half, they were able to revive team spirit and were approaching victory when inefficient defending caused them to concede goals and end the match in a draw.
Best Goal: While Raheem Sterling’s goal against Salzburg deserves mention, Chelsea’s best so far is undoubtedly KalidouKoulibaly’s goal against Tottenham. The defender effectively tackled a corner shot, to score his very first goal for the team is his debut match.
Best New Signing: New players Marc Cucurella and KalidouKoulibaly have assimilated into their teams well, except for a red card that Koulibaly incurred against Leeds. However, the smoothest transition has been that of Raheem Sterling, who has had a measurable impact since his move from Manchester City. With 5 goals in 8 matches, he is Chelsea’s lone consistent striker. He has also already scored a brace against Leicester. With Aubameyang set to join, a more lethal combination of the two could arise.
Biggest disappointment: While Chelsea’s loss to Zagreb proved to be the major factor for Tuchel’s dismissal, their 3-0 loss to Leeds remains their worst performance of the season. This included a major blunder from the goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and a second yellow card for Koulibaly.
Biggest positive: Though affairs have been grim for Chelsea, there is some hope in the swift manner that Graham Potter was appointed. Furthermore, with some recent postponements, there is plenty of time to rethink their strategy for the upcoming matches. With no injured players, and Aubameyang set to make his debut, Chelsea’s fortunes have an opportunity to turn.
Surprise Package: Ruben Loftus-Cheek has played a larger role in this season, due to the absence of Kovacic and Kante, who are known to have a more conservative approach. While his goalscoring ability is currently limited, he has left a mark that could result in future inclusion in the first team.
Could do better: Chelsea has many faltering players, who need to pick up on their performances. This includes Kai Havertz who is lagging on goals. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech are currently not starting for the team and must improve their performances to do so. Jorginho has also been making errors, while Conor Gallagher has failed to recreate his performances while on loan to Crystal Palace.
