The 2022 Road World Championships are set to take place from 18th-25th September in Wollongong, Australia. With 1000 riders and 11 races, there are many riders to watch out for. This includes French rider Julian Alaphilippe who is the winner of the last two men’s road races, and Italian Elisa Balsamo who is the current champion of the women’s race. The Italian squad also include Filippo Ganna who won time trials in 2021, along with the Dutch Ellen Van Dijk.

Belgium are favorites with team members Wout van Aert, who won the green jersey at the Tour De France, and Remco Evenepoel who is the defending Vuelta champion. Rivals Slovenia also look strong with Tadej Pogacar who has won the Tour twice, and recently defeated Van Aert at the GP de Montreal. Meanwhile, the French team includes Christopher Laporte, along with Alaphilippe who is currently recovering from injuries.

In the women’s race, the Dutch are the strongest title contenders with riders like Annemeik van Vleuten, who won the race in 2019 and is currently on a performance high, having won the Tour de France Femmes, Giro d’Italia Donne and the Ceratizit Challenge. Rivals include teammate Demi Vollering, who was runner up at the Tour, and Olympic Champion Marianne Vos, who has won the title thrice.
