New BCCI president Roger Binny begins his journey
Roger Binny has been appointed as the BCCI’s 36th president, at the Annual General Meeting. Prior to this, Binny was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in Bengaluru and has occupied various roles during his career including those of a cricketer, coach, selector, and administrator. Known to follow rules closely and avoid the limelight, Binny has had a multidimensional career since the time he scored 451 runs in a partnership with Sanjay Desai in a Ranji Trophy match against Kerala in the 1977-78 season. A member of the World Cup winning squad of 1983, Binny’s first coaching stint was for the Under-19 team who subsequently won the U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, followed by coaching of the U-16 team leading to the discovery of players such as Irfan Pathan, Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu.
According to Reetinder Sodhi, vice-captain of the U-19 team that won the World Cup in 2000, Binny is known for his objectivity, calmness, and the ability to hone talent. This includes allowing players to take certain decisions that build maturity as well as listening to various points of view without blanket assertiveness. Furthermore, he is also experienced in conflict resolution and was tasked with heading the KSCA during a tumultuous time. The support he won there ultimately helped him to land his current position as BCCI president. Binny has also worked on overhauling the Karnataka Premier League and is expected to bring long term changes to cricket in India.
