PGA Tour responds to Liv Golf with increased spending
The PGA Tour has responded to Liv Golf’s growing dominance with an increase in spending that aims to inject 20 million USD individually into next year’s Phoenix Open, Heritage Tournament, Wells Fargo Championship, and the Travelers Championship. Star players have also been roped in with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and the current Masters champion Scottie Sheffler set to appear in 17 events, in an effort to counter the exodus of players to Liv tournaments. This includes players such as the third ranked Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Abraham Ancer, Dustin Johnson, and veterans such as Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed.
Several other events have also had their purses increased including the major championships – the Players Championship, WGC Match Play, the Tournament of Champions, the FedEx Cup playoff events, and Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational. Furthermore, the PGA Tour will henceforth require that all players who end the season ranked in the top 20 of the Player Impact Programme, which assesses player popularity, must participate in all events they qualify for and three more, so as to ensure at least 20 appearances a year.
