Andy Murray returns to Davis Cup
Andy Murray helped Great Britain lift the Davis Cup after 79
years, in 2015. However, with lacklustre form, he passed up the opportunity to
participate in Iast years event, a decision he has since branded a “mistake”.
The three-time Grand Slam winner is on this year’s team along with Cameron
Norrie, Dan Evans, Joe Salisbury, and Neal Skupski. With Norrie, Evans and
Murray all ranked within the World top 50 men’s singles ranking, and Salisbury
and Skuski ranked as the top and third ranked doubles players, Great Britain are
strong contenders for the title.
With a hip resurfacing operation in 2019, Murray’s journey
back into the tennis circuit has been challenging, and while he may not play
any match in the Davis Cup, he is a worthy addition to the team. Matches in the
group stage include those against the US, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands, and
team coach Leon Smith is banking on Murray’s experience at the Davis Cup, and
his understanding of the sport, to aid the team’s performance. Murray provided
a crucial 11 out of 12 points that helped Britain win the Davis Cup in 2015.
