Australian cricketer David Warner has reacted to Cricket Australia’s lifetime ban on him, and has defended his family, who he feels has faced derogatory comments from the independent panel last week at a hearing. Previously, Cricket Australia had made changes to its code of conduct which permitted Warner to appeal the decision to ban him.
However, Warner has chosen to withdraw the appeal and has remarked that his family is “more important” to him than cricket. According to Warner, over the last five years, through all the criticism faced by him, he has always had the unconditional support of his wife Candice, and his three daughters Ivy Mae, Indi Rae and Isla Rose, and has decided to withdraw the appeal against his ban in their interest.
He has also remarked how, after the fateful Test match that led to his ban, which may never be lifted, he has taken the initiative to change his overall approach to the game. According to Warner, the penalty he was served has harmed his reputation and hurt his family for the past five years, until he took the decision to withdraw the appeal.
Warner has also rued how he had hoped to prove to the review panel that he had not only felt “deep regret” and “remorse” over his actions, but that his transformation had also been all-round. According to the Australian opener, he has now given up hope on being able to demonstrate the changes in him that could result in a modification of the ban, so that he could conclude his career without stigma. Since that has not happened, he has now decided to prioritize his family.
