Meet the new Boxing World Female Champion, Nina Hughes.
Nina Hughes is a British professional boxer. She has held the WBA female bantamweight world title since 2022 after defeating Jamie Mitchell by decision.
She started boxing professionally last year after previously fighting in the British Olympic squad. Even by the standards of women's boxing, Nina Hughes' rise to the top was cluttered.
This is made even more remarkable by the fact that Hughes is a 41-year-old mother of two who still works part-time as a secretary to support her young children.
However, not quite as fast as it might appear at first glance. Hughes has boxed for more than 15 years. She has been written off many times, not least by herself.
She arrived almost as an unknown to be the star of the main fight. On November 26, in Dubai, British Nina Hughes broke all odds by unanimously defeating American Jamie Mitchell to be crowned the new World Boxing Association 118-pound champion.
The judges' scorecards were 96-94 on two cards and the third by 97-93, all in favor of Hughes.
Hughes completed her fifth fight here. Yes, with only five professional bouts she is already a world champion. And not only did she upset her opponents in her few fights, but she was also underestimated by her age, as she turned 40 this year.
The style of neat, orderly, and solid leg movements, plus the tough spirit in the ring, position her with a promising projection within the division that now reigns with the black and gold belt.
