The thirty-year-old Brazilian’s arrival at Old Trafford, from Real Madrid, has been surrounded by considerable fanfare and media coverage. The defensive midfielder, who is a five-time winner of the Champions League, and known for his ability to tackle and disrupt the game of opponent teams, was given a final farewell by The Whites, that read, “Thank you, legend.”
Casemiro’s journey startedin 2002, in Sao Paulo’s youth football, eight years after which he made his professional debut in a match against Santos.
He soon impressed scouts with his win of the Copa Sudamericana in 2012, which catapulted him on a loan to Real Madrid, in the January of 2013. While initially a member of the B team, his first La Liga game ended in a 3-1 victory over Real Betis.
The streak continued, and soon culminated in winning the Champions League in 2014, where he had made 6 appearances for the team.
After a loan in Porto for the 2014-15 season, which earned him considerable experience, he returned to Real Madrid, and started his integration with the first team. It was after the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as manager in 2016, that Casemiro’s role in the team greatly increased.
He participated in 11 matches in the Champions League, which the club then won for the 11th time. Since then, he has been unstoppable. Scoring in the finals of both the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup the following season (both of which were won by Real Madrid), and a debut victory at the La Liga, displayed the talented midfielders’ skills, alongside those of Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos.
A subsequent Champions League victory in the 2017-18 season – such an undefeated run by a club had not happened since 1992 – and a third LA Liga title on the 2021-22 season, sealed Casemiro’s place in history.
The dynamic midfielder has also left his mark on Brazilian national football. He was a member of both the under-17 and under-20 teams and played against Argentina at the age of 19. He was also in the teams that played the 2018 World Cup final in Russia, and defeated Chile to win the Copa America in 2019.
His arrival at Old Trafford has thus generated high expectations from fans and experts alike. It remains to be seen what new heights Casemiro can steer Manchester United to.
