Venus Williams to play at the Australian Open
Venus Williams has won a wildcard entry for the 2023
Australian Open, where she has played 22 times, after a historic gap of 25
years from the year where she first participated. She has previously qualified
to the final on two occasions, one of which ended in a loss to her sister
Serena, who recently retired, in the 2017 edition.
In a statement, the 42-year-old Williams expressed honour to
be able to play for the Australian community again,and hoped that it would be a
memorable tournament. William has previously won the doubles titles on 4
occasions with her sister Serena Williams, as well as a mixed doubles title
with Justin Gimelstob in 1998.
According to the tennis legend, the host nation of the first
major of the season has been familiar to her for 20 years, and she is hence
excited to return to Melbourne for the event in January. Australian Open
director Craig Tiley has also expressed delight at Venus’ return, who is
considered to be an inspirational player and leader, both. Serena Williams,
however, will not be in action after announcing at the US Open that she will be
evolving into roles outside of tennis
