The 2022 FIFA World Cup ended with a bang, as Argentina and France battled it out at the Lusail stadium. While it started amid controversy, the entire tournament had many memorable moments:
1) Saudi Arabia’s victory over Argentina in the Group C game stunned onlookers as Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari scored to win a match they had initially been trailing after Messi scored a penalty.
2) South Korea found themselves in an unusual position, after they won their final Group H game with a late goal by Hwang Hee-chan, as they had to wait for the Uruguay-Ghana match to conclude, to know if they had qualified to the round of 16, which they did.
3) Fans felt Messi’s magic many times during the tournament including when he successfully tackled Croatian defender JoskoGvardiol with a twist to set up the third goal of the semifinal game.
4) French referee Stephanie Frappart, who was assigned the Germany’s final match against Costa Rica, was the first female referee to adjudge a match at the men’s world cup, with Costa Rican coach Luis Fernandez Suarez describing it as a major step forward.
5) Germany’s opening match Group E match proved to be a shocker as they lost 2-1 to Japan, whose goals were scored by substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano who staged a comeback win.
6) Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to qualify to the semifinals, before which their journey included a defeat of Spain in the group stage in a penalty shootout, and defeat of Portugal at the quarter-finals where they defended their 1-0 lead ferociously.
7) Cameroonian player Vincent Aboubakar, who scored a goal in stoppage time, to seal the team’s historic win over Brazil, provided a moment of comedy as he took off his shirt in celebration and was handed a yellow card by an apologetic referee.
8) Mbappe proved his dominance with an exhilarating performance against Poland where he clocked speeds of upto 35.3 kph, as he scored 2 goals and assisted Giroud in another, to lead a 3-0 win.
9) Legendary player Christiano Ronaldo ended his World Cup hopes with heartbreak, even though he became the first player to score in 5 World Cups after scoring a penalty against Ghana. He was benched for crucial matches and was unable to salvage his team’s performance against Morocco and exited the field in tears.
