As 2022 draws to a close, the shortlist of the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022 award has been released.
1) Suryakumar Yadav, India: With 1164 runs in 31 matches, Yadav is the highest run-scorer of the year in the T20I format, with an impressive strike rate of 187.43. He is now the second batter who scored more than 1000 runs in a calendar year, which included 68 sixes – a feat that hasnot been achieved before, as well two centuries and nine half-centuries. At the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, Yadav scored three half-centuries over six innings, with a strike-rate of 189.68, and together with his performance in New Zealand, earned the top-ranking in the MF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings. His standout match of the year was against England in Nottingham, where he scored 117 off 55 balls.
2) Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe: With 735 runs scored at a strike rate of over 150, and 25 wickets claimed with an economy rate of 6.13 over 24c matches, Raza had an impressive year as an all-rounder. He also made a mark for Zimbabwe at the T20 World Cup in Australia and scored 250 runs more than the next highest run scorer of his nation. Raza’s standout performance of the year was the role played by him in Zimbabwe’s victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, where he dismissed 3 players for 25 runs, and managed a run-out in the final delivery, to lead his team to victory by one run.
3) Sam Curran, England: With 67 runs scored and 25 wickets claimed in 19 matches, Sam Curran had an impressive year of bowling, especially death bowling. In England’s T20 World Cup victory, Curran claimed a total of 13 wickets, which was second only to Sri Lanka’s WaninduHasaranga. In the absence of key fast bowlers, Curran claimed 5 wickets for 10 runs against Afghanistan, which was the first time that any English bowler has dismissed 5 players in a single match, in men’s T20I. He also captured three wickets in the T20 World Cup final.
4) Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan: With 996 runs, 9 catches
and 3 stumpings in 25 matches, the Pakistani all-rounder and wicketkeeper had
an impressive year with only Suryakumar Yadav having scored more runs. He
scored 10 fifties, and 175 runs at the World Cup, which was the joint highest
for a Pakistan batter. He also briefly toppedthe MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I
player rankings and is currentlyholds thesecond spot. Among his memorable
performances this year was his 88 runs off 51 deliveries in a home series
against England, where Pakistan scored more than 200 runs without losing any
wickets.
