Sourav Ganguly has revealed his next venture and he gears up to take on the role of the Director of ATK Mohun Bagan. This comes after the end of his tenure as BCCI President, after he was replaced by versatile ex-cricketer Roger Binny in an election.
This is not Ganguly’s first association with the club, with whom she shares a long history. When the Indian Super League kicked off in 2014, Ganguly was a part of Athletico-Kolkata, which was later renamed to ATK, prior to its merge with club legends Mohun Bagan, to form the ATK-Mohun Bagan. Ganguly was a member of the Board of Directors of ATK Mohun Bagan, owned by SajivGoenka, a role from which he stepped down in 2021.
As he prepares for his second innings with the club, the former Indian captain has admitted to being nostalgic on returning to the club and its historical grounds. He is also looking forward to watching the Kolkata Derby slated for the 29th of October, between ATK Mohun Bagan and Emami East Bengal at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan.
On being asked about the new AIFF president, Ganguly expressed hope that with an ex-footballer as the current president, and the growing popularity of domestic football and the presence of international-level players like Sunil Chettri, football is expected to receive a boost. Meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan has expressed faith in Ganguly’s upcoming leadership-based role in the club and is looking to welcome back their “own boy”.
