Neymar hints at retirement after World Cup loss
Neymar Jr. did not get the chance to
attempt his penalty in Brazil’s match against Croatia, as Marquinho’s miss in
the fourth attempt sent Croatia to the quarterfinal, who will now face Argentina.
According to Brazil’s coach Tite, the team would have benefitted from Neymar
taking the last penalty shot as he is good at handling pressure. Meanwhile, the
Brazilian legend Pele remains in hospital with an infection aggravated by
Covid-19, while Neymar has joined Ronaldo(Nazario) as the only Brazilian
footballers to score multiple goals across three World Cups. While Neymar has
scored 77 goals in 124 matches for Brazil, Pele made 92 appearances for Brazil
between 1957 and 1971. Forward in the women’s team, Marta, also holds the
national record for 115 goals in 171 games.
Neymar, who has formerly played for Santos
and Barcelona, made his international debut in an international friendly
against USA. Now a part of Paris Saint-Germain, he entered the World Cup 2
goals behind Pele’s record. The World Cup title, however, has remained elusive
to the Brazilian, who sustained an injury in the quarterfinal clash against
Colombia, in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, followed by a 7-1 defeat to Germany in
the semi-final. He was also a member of the squad that reached the
quarterfinals in Russia, where they were beaten by Belgium. However, Neymar’s
club career has been stellar and includes two LaLiga trophies, a Champions
League title, four Ligue 1 titles and a Copa Libertadores.
