Meg Lanning, the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, is currently on an extended break, and the team may soon need a new captain. Here are the possible contenders for the role:

1) Alyssa Healy: As Healey gears up for retirement soon and a possible transition to a mentorship-based role, a short-term captaincy stint for the player would not be surprising. With experience in coaching in state cricket, she would be a good fit, especially if Meg Lanning is expected to return.

2) Beth Mooney: As a skilled batter across all formats, who has already led Queensland to win the T20 title, Mooney is also a suitable contender for the role. However, she is expected to take on the role of a wicketkeeper after Healy’s exit, and this could make it challenging for her to balance both roles.

3) Ash Gardner: The 25-year-old has already demonstratedher leadership qualities with the role she has playedin increasing awareness about indigenous culture. She has also captained the Aboriginal team at the age of 20, on a tour of England, and has expressed her desire to lead teams in the future.

4) Tahlia McGrath: Captain of the Adelaide strikers, McGrath is also a frontrunner for the top post. Though she had never planned to take on any leadership roles, she has begun to enjoy the process, especially after leading the Strikers.

5) Jess Jonassen: Known for her calm demeanor, and steady performances on the field, Jonassen is currently captain of Queensland and Brisbane Heat and credits her predecessor Short for her inspiration. She also believes in the mantra of leading by example, rather than instruction.
