FIH Women’s Nations Cup: India set to face Ireland in semis
Riding on the high of three back-to-back wins, the Indian women’s hockey team is set to take on Ireland next at the semifinals of the FIH Women’s Nations Cup. Led by Savita Punia, the team have so far had an undefeated run with victories over Chile (3-1), Japan (2-1), and South Africa (2-0) to emerge as the top ranked team in Pool B. However, the team, which is captained by Savita Punia and coached by Janneke Schopman, has demonstrated some vulnerabilities which include the ability to take advantage of penalty corners effectively. Ranked 8, India is the stronger team against Ireland, who are ranked 13, but must steer clear of complacency given that Ireland finished second in Pool A.
Impressive players in the Indian team include mid-fielders and forwards such as Salima Tete, Sonika, Navneet Kaur, Vandana Katariya, and Beauty Dungdung. The defence has been strong, with Deep Grace Ekka and Gurjit Kaur stumbling on occasion. Captain and goalkeeper Savita has also played a key role in the team’s winning performances. According to her, the team will look to continue their impressive form in the match against Ireland, just as they had against Chile, Japan and South Africa. If India wni the tournament, they automatically qualify to FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League, which would serve as important experience ahead of the Asian Games and 2024 Paris Olympics. The second semifinal is to play out between hosts Spain and Japan.
