Eliud Kipchoge’s chances at a new World Record
As he gears up for the Berlin marathon on, two-time Olympic
Gold medalist, Eliud Kipchoge is closer to setting a new World Record from his
current time of two hours, one minute and thirty-nine seconds.
Incidentally, the
record was set at the Berlin marathon four years ago, following which he has
accumulated an impressive list of achievements, including winning his fourth
London Marathon and the Tokyo marathon last year, as well as the Olympic Gold.
However, the characteristically humble runner has downplayed the buzz and
stated that he simply wants to run a good race and test his limits.
Kipchoge is also known for successfully breaking the 2-hour
barrier, by running a marathon in one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds in a much-publicized
event in Vienna, Austria. It was part of his ongoing efforts to transform the
world into a “running village” and inspire people to outrun their best
competitors – themselves. At the Berlin marathon, Kipchoge is set to take on
defending champion GuyeAdola of Ethiopia, who he defeated in 2017, and is
hopeful about his performance as he has not run the Berlin course after setting
his sub two-hour record, which has made him believe in newer possibilities. A
win would also bring the runner at par with marathon legend Haile Gebrselassie,
who won the Berlin marathon 4 times.
Above all, Kipchoge hopes to ace the mind game
which he considers as important as the physical effort needed to run a fast
marathon. According to him, he has trained sufficiently, and maintaining focus
through the course of the race is key to implementing it.
