President’s Cup: LIV Golf’s continued disruption
The USA are set to soon defend the President’s Cup, which has been won by the International team (which includes players who are not from USA or Europe) only once since 1994. However, the title is generally well contested by players like Cameron Smith of Australia, Joaquin Niemann of Chile, and Abraham Ancer of Mexico. However, these players among others, such as Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman, and Branden Grace, are missing from action at the President’s Cup due to their involvement in rival league LIV Golf.
The US team is also missing key players such as Dustin Johnson, who was the winner of all matches at the Ryder Cup, Brooks Kopeka and Bryson DeChambeau. As the President’s Cup is a PGA event, all those involved in LIV Golf are barred from participating. Meanwhile, players themselves feel that events such as the President’s Cup should rise above the PGA-LIV rivalry and not ban players such as Smith and Oosthuizen, who are disappointed to miss out, and maintain that their decision to play for LIV Golf is not one that is inherently against the sport and hence not worth penalizing. With a younger, and dynamic squad the President’s Cup is gearing up to face the challenges of the disruption caused by LIV Golf.
