The biggest cricket league in the world, the Indian Premier League, or IPL, kicked off on March 31st, 2023.

The 16th edition of the Premier League comprises of 10 teams, like the previous year, consisting of top cricket players from around the world.

In this edition of IPL, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have introduced some new rules.

The rules are nothing new to the cricket world as they are being executed in international cricket.

One of these new rules is the "Impact Player Rule."

In the following article, we will know about the "Impact Player Rule" and how it will impact the league and teams.

What is the impact player rule in IPL 2023?

The Impact Player rule states that a team can bring in an Impact Player at any point in an inning to replace a player from the playing 11 during the match. According to the new impact rule in IPL, each team will name 5 substitutes alongside the starting XI before the toss. One of these 5 substitutes can be used as an Impact Player in the match.

When can the Impact Player be introduced?

The BCCI tested the Impact Player rule during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy held in October-November 2022.

An Impact Player can be brought in before the start of an inning, at the end of an over, at the fall of a wicket, or when a batter retires.

If the impact player is a bowler who comes in at the fall of a wicket, he is not allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the over.

If a player gets injured, he can be replaced by an Impact Player. In such cases, the "replaced player" will play no further part in the game.

What are the Impact Player Regulations?

The Captain will nominate the Impact Player and inform the on-field umpire before making the change.

The Impact Player can only be an Indian player unless fewer than 4 overseas players are in the original playing 11.

The Impact Player can bat and or bowl his full quota of four overs, irrespective of the player he is replacing.

Bringing in the "Impact Player" during the match is not compulsory. Teams can decide whether they want to use the Impact Player or not.

An Impact Player can not be used if the game is shortened to less than 10 overs per side.
