The T20 World Cup has always been a global stage for dazzling batting displays and revealed upcoming talents. As the 2022 edition approaches, we look at the highest run scorers till date:

1) Babar Azam, 2021 T20 World Cup:Consistency defined Azam’s performance as he scored 4 half-centuries, a record heldby Virat Kohli in 2014, and Matthew Hayden in 2007. He also scored 152 runs (not out) in a partnership with Mohammad Rizwan that helped Pakistan in its key victory over India.

2) Tamim Iqbal, 2016 T20 World Cup: The Bangladeshi announced his presence to the cricketing world after scoring 83 (not out) in the inaugural match against the Dutch, and again left his mark with a century against Oman. While Iqbal successfully led his team to the Super 10 round, they failed to make it past the group stage.


 

3) Virat Kohli, 2014 T20 World Cup: Kohli was in his best form at the 2014 edition, and had already scored 319 runs in 6 matches, which included 4 half-centuries. Giving India a competitive edge, he also scored 77 runs off 58 balls, but was nevertheless unable to help India win the trophy.

4) Shane Watson, 2012 T20 World Cup: The versatile player impressed with both his batting and bowling and went on to win the Player of the Tournament award after leaving a mark on each match. He scored 51 off 30 balls in the first match, followed by a rapid 41 runs (not out) off 24 balls, then 72 runs off 42 balls in Australia’s match against India and then a fifty against South Africa. His campaign was cut short when the team lost in the semifinals against West Indies.


 

5)Mahale Jayawardena, 2010 T20 World Cup: The Sri Lankan legend gave his team the upper hand with 81 runs scored off 51 balls against New Zealand, in a match they ultimately lost. He then went on to score their only century off 64 balls against Zimbabwe, along with a hat-trick of half-centuries subsequently.

6) Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2009 T20 World Cup: Dilshan’s dynamic hitting and “Dil-scooping” of the ball helped him to score 50 boundaries, which Jacques Kallis having scored the next higher number, which was 18 boundaries behind, to consequently win the Player of the Tournament award. With consecutive centuries and a score of 96 runs (not out) off 57 balls against Pakistan, he played a key role in Sri Lanka’s qualification to the final.

7) Matthew Hayden, 2007 T20 World Cup: In the very first edition of the World Cup, the Australian legend created ripples with the highest number of boundaries (42) and scoring a total of 265 runs in 6 games. He remained unbeaten in several matches and scored 67 off 43 balls, 73 of 48 balls and 58 off 38 balls against England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively.
