Shaun Murphy has likened the World Snooker Championship format which allows the world’s top 16 players to qualify directly to the final 32, to a race where Usain Bolt starts 15 metres ahead of other athletes.

According to him, the current format offers an unfair advantage to players at the top, compared to the other 16 players who must prove themselves in a well-fought qualification round, which involves winning 4 matches.

That the top 16 players start 3-4 matches ahead of those who need to qualify has been described by him as “absolutely ridiculous”.

Murphy also feels that the Masters event should be counted as a ranking event, being the second biggest tournament in the sport, and one of the oldest.

Even though the top 16 play in it, it is not an invitational event according to him, as any player on tour with enough victories, can land a spot in the top 16. Moreover, the ranking list is decided over a two-year period, providing ample time to contenders to find themselves in the top 16. Thus, the prize money won should count towards ones ranking.
