The Breeder’s Cup Classic, which is considered to be the Super Bowl of thoroughbred racing, concluded with an emotional win by racehorse Flightline and his three-time jockey Flavien Prat.
The 4-year-old colt, who remains undefeated in his 6-race career so far, edged past crowd favourite Life is Good to clinch victory with a record making 8.25 lengths. As the race ended, trainers unanimously expressed admiration and disbelief at Flightline’s performance of overtaking Life is Good and winning by a large margin.
This included Doug O’Neill, who has won the Kentucky Derby twice, and whose racehorse Hot Rod Charlie finished 6th amongst 8 horses. According to O’Neill, Flightline is a “freakish” horse and the best that he has seen in his lifetime. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, whose racehorse Olympiad finished second, also feels that Flightline is a special horse who is comparable to the greats of the past, and his ability to overtake Life is Good and win the race comfortably was no mean feat.
Furthermore, Jimmy Barnes, who has worked with Triple Crown winners, also agrees that Flightline is among the greats.
However, Flightline’s career has been challenging, even though he has seen a meteoric rise with 5 wins in 17 months and has win his races on average by 62.75 lengths. When he was three, he missed winning any of the Triple Crown races due to persistent injuries, causing his performances to fly under the radar. However, his improvement has been spectacular, and he left the crowds amazed as he pulled away from Life is Good to win the title decisively. According to Flightline’s trainer, the 66-year-old John Sadler, the brilliance of Flightline’s performance is unsurprising as he is a remarkable racehorse, and the fact that he had an opportunity to train him is the culmination of a life’s work.
Flightline’s future is currently uncertain, as he may never race again, and instead serve the role of a stallion in thorough breeding. The various owners, who hold a joint 37% share are to meet soon to chart put the journey ahead.
Racehorses are prone to severe injury, and the Breeder’s Classic was no exception with racehorses Epicenter and Domestic Spending sustaining a fracture and a pelvic injury respectively. If Flightline is to be protected from this, his journey as a racehorse may be over, with an indelible mark etched in history forever.
