India set to bid for 2036 Olympics, according to Anurag Thakur
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has stated that India is
set to bid for the 2036 Olympics, and a blueprint will be discussed with the
International Olympic Committee during an IOC session in September of 2023.
According to Thakur, the government will be supporting the Indian Olympic
Association’s bid to host the games, with Ahmedabad to be the proposed host
city as world-class sports facilities and infrastructure are present there.
Thakur has also stated that since India hosted the 1982
Asian Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Summer Olympics are the next
target. India are the current holders of the G20 Presidency, and the government
can be relied upon to support the bid for 2036, Thakur asserted.
On being asked if India was ready yet to host the Olympics,
Thakur has explained, that Gujarat has expressed interest several times about
hosting the games as it possesses much of the infrastructure required, and with
India making large strides in manufacturing and services, sports is next in
line. The roadmap to be presented at the IOC session, will also be drafted by
the government in consultation with the IOC.
