Hockey World Cup: India placed in tough group, with England, Spain, and Wales
India is set to face a tough group stage at the Hockey World
Cup in Odisha in 2023, where it has been placed in group D, along with England,
Wales, and Spain. While the Indian team holds the top rank among the 4
contenders as World No. 5, qualifying past the group stage is expected to be a
challenge. England are ranked directly below, and have a record of beating
India, with their high scoring abilities. Spain, ranked at 8, are in better
form since the hiring of former Netherlands coach Max Caldas, and Wales, ranked
at 16, are known to put up a spirited performance against top teams.
While group winners qualify directly for the quarterfinals,
teams in the second and third position face further play-offs to secure a
berth. Based on the draw, Pool D seems the most challenging with teams of equal
quality. The other Pools are Pool A with Australia, France, Argentina and South
Africa, Pool B with Germany, Belgium, Japan and South Korea, and Pool D with
the Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia and Chile.
