Guglielmo Vicario: Serie A to Premier League Journey
Few Italian footballers have made the leap to the English Premier League, and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario offers insights into this trend.
While some notable Italians like Gianfranco Zola and Mario Balotelli have thrived in England, many of Italy's top talents tend to remain in Serie A. Vicario suggests that this reluctance to move abroad stems from cultural disparities and the comfort of staying close to home.
Unlike some of his compatriots, Vicario embraced the challenge of joining Spurs and experiencing life in London. He acknowledges the hurdles of adjusting to a new language and climate but views it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth.
For Vicario, stepping out of his comfort zone was more enticing than clinging to familiarity. His willingness to embrace change reflects a personal philosophy of seeking challenges and broadening horizons.
"I don’t need comfortable stuff in my life," he said. "Life is too easy to live in a comfort zone – for me this was a challenge. The level here is the best in the world. It was also an opportunity to experience how people live in a different way to Italy, and to learn a new language in a new dressing room.""Many Italians don’t want this opportunity – because of the different culture, it’s not easy to say, ‘OK, we go to another country, maybe we don’t know the language, and it could be a little bit colder during winter,’" Vicario told FourFourTwo in an exclusive interview.
"But I only thought about the chance to join Spurs, to play in the Premier League and to live in a big city like London."
Ultimately, the decision to move to the Premier League or stay in Serie A boils down to individual preferences and priorities. While some may prioritize the comforts of home, others like Vicario are driven by the allure of new experiences and the opportunity to test their skills against the best in the world.
