Jessie Fleming, the 25-year-old midfielder from Chelsea, has made a noteworthy move to join the Portland Thorns for the upcoming NWSL season, starting on March 16th, in a deal valued at £250,000.
This transfer marks one of the most expensive signings by an American women's club.
Fleming, boasting an impressive record, has secured three Women's Super League (WSL) titles, three Women's FA Cups, and the League Cup since her arrival from UCLA Bruins in 2020.
With 123 caps for Canada, she played a crucial role in their 2021 Olympic gold victory in Tokyo, scoring in the final.
Expressing her excitement about joining the Portland Thorns, Fleming said, "I am very excited to be joining the Portland Thorns. More than anything, I am looking forward to being a part of the incredible community surrounding the team that is so often talked about with Portland. I feel honored to represent these people and this city, and cannot wait to get started."
Portland Thorns head coach Mike Norris highlighted the significance of Fleming's addition, stating, "Adding a player of Jessie's calibre is a big step for us as we continue to build the roster for 2024 and beyond. Jessie has great ability to connect and create in midfield, making her a very dynamic option for us. Her eye for a final pass will be a great asset for our front line, and her physical capabilities to go box-to-box make her a very complete world-class midfielder."
