Marchand Sets Olympic Record with Gold in 400m Medley for France.

France's Leon Marchand thrilled the home crowd by setting a new Olympic record to win gold in the 400m individual medley at the Paris Games.

Leon Marchand secured the first of his hoped-for four individual golds in Paris by winning the 400m individual medley with a 5.67-second lead over Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita. The USA's Carson Foster took third place.

Great Britain's Max Litchfield finished fourth for the third consecutive Olympics, setting a new British record of four minutes 8.85 seconds.

Marchand, 22, was cheered on by the enthusiastic home crowd as he narrowly missed his own world record but set a new Olympic record, surpassing the mark set by Michael Phelps in 2008.

Trained by Bob Bowman, Phelps' former coach, Marchand will also compete in the 200m medley, 200m butterfly, and 200m breaststroke. Phelps was present to witness Marchand's victory.
