American star Coco Gauff, currently ranked world number six, has ended her coaching relationship with Brad Gilbert. The split comes just two weeks after Gauff called her US Open title defense 'disappointing.'
Coco Gauff, 20, won her first major under coach Brad Gilbert’s guidance last year in New York. However, she was knocked out in the fourth round this year by Emma Navarro.
Gilbert, who has also coached Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick, wrote on X, 'Coco, your future is incredibly bright. I wish you continued success.' He also mentioned he's excited for the next chapter in his coaching career.
Gauff brought Gilbert on board alongside Spanish coach Pere Riba after a tough first-round exit at Wimbledon last year.
With their help, Gauff turned her season around, winning 18 of her next 19 matches and claiming titles in Washington, Cincinnati, and New York.
Beating Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final was Gauff’s 12th consecutive victory, a career-best streak.
Spanish coach Pere Riba left the team in November, leaving Gilbert as Gauff’s main coach.
Since winning the Auckland title in January, Gauff hasn’t reached another final this year. She made it to the semi-finals at the Australian and French Opens but was eliminated in the fourth round at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Concerns about her serve and forehand, highlighted by 19 double faults against Navarro, led to questions about her future with Gilbert.
Gilbert, 63, thanked Gauff and the team for their remarkable efforts over the past 14 months and the successful summer of 2023.
