Antony Reflects on Favela Roots, Current Struggles, and Future Goals at Man Utd.

Manchester United winger Antony has shared that his difficult upbringing in Brazil makes it impossible for critics to define his career or deter him from his path.

Manchester United made Antony the second-most expensive player in their history, paying £82m to Ajax in 2022, behind only Paul Pogba.

At 24, Antony has struggled to live up to that price tag, with just five goals and three assists in 54 Premier League appearances. He ended last season on the bench and didn’t play in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Ahead of this weekend’s Community Shield rematch against Manchester City, Antony opened up about his challenging past in a São Paulo favela, where not all his friends were able to escape their circumstances. 'It's hard for me to discuss my background,' he said, responding in Portuguese to questions in English.
