New Zealand is mourning the loss of a promising talent as Super Rugby winger Connor Garden-Bachop has passed away at the age of 25.
Known for his electrifying speed and agility on the field, Garden-Bachop's untimely death has left a significant void in the rugby community. His career, though brief, was marked by remarkable achievements and memorable performances, making his passing a profound loss to fans and teammates alike.
Garden-Bachop passed away in Christchurch on Monday due to a medical event, according to New Zealand Rugby. His father, Stephen Bachop, represented Samoa and New Zealand, while his mother, Sue Garden-Bachop, played for the New Zealand women's team, the Black Ferns.
Connor was also the nephew of Graeme Bachop, a former All Blacks scrum-half who competed in the 1991 and 1995 World Cups and later played for Japan in the 1999 tournament.
Garden-Bachop recently played for the Highlanders for five years, departing earlier this month after their Super Rugby campaign ended in the quarter-finals.
"All of rugby walks alongside the Garden-Bachop family at this time, and we are collectively united in our grief," said a statement from New Zealand Rugby.
"Connor was a fantastic young player, a standout in New Zealand age-grade teams, and a proud Maori All Black. He was a dedicated and popular teammate, known for his infectious energy and ability to light up any room."
