Hannah French netted the decisive goal as Great Britain secured a 2-1 win over South Africa, enhancing their chances of advancing at the Paris Olympics.

Hannah French's third-quarter goal secured Great Britain's first win of the women's hockey tournament at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, following earlier losses to Spain and Australia that had left them at the bottom of Pool B.

South Africa took the lead early with Kayla de Waal scoring from a penalty corner. However, Olympic debutant Amy Costello leveled the score with a well-executed penalty corner before halftime.

French, who had previously hit the post, seized her chance with a controlled, powerful strike past South Africa's goalkeeper, Anelle Lloyd.

"We were deflated after the back-to-back losses, but it's tournament hockey," said Costello. "We've got two more games ahead, so we focused on moving forward rather than dwelling on the past."
