Van de Velde's Olympic Bid: Former Convict Takes the Stage This Sunday.

Steven van de Velde, a figure surrounded by controversy, will step into the Olympic spotlight for the first time this Sunday morning. His journey to the Games has sparked intense debate, adding an unexpected layer of drama to his debut.

The Dutch Olympic Committee (NOC) has faced backlash for including 29-year-old Steven van de Velde in the beach volleyball team.

Van de Velde, who will play alongside Matthew Immers, is set to make his Olympic debut on July 28 against Italy's Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Carambula at the Eiffel Tower stadium.

Kate Seary, co-founder of Kyniska Advocacy, criticized the decision, stating that it implies athletic talent outweighs past criminal actions.

Meanwhile, Dutch chef de mission Pieter van den Hoogenband acknowledged the controversy but emphasized the need to support Van de Velde as a team member.
