Ideal IPL Franchise Wishlist: Mega Auctions Every 5 Years and Eight RTM Options.

Hold a major auction every five years. Let teams keep 4 to 6 players. Each team will get 8 chances to match other teams’ bids for their players. These are key ideas shared by franchises with IPL officials about player retention for the 2025 auction.

IPL officials will meet with the franchises soon, possibly next week, to discuss the next steps.

A senior franchise official suggests that holding the mega auction every five years, instead of every three, has multiple benefits. A longer interval would allow teams to focus on growing young, uncapped Indian players and maintain continuity.

Teams with long histories, like those since 2008, have invested in academies to develop talent from the grassroots.

A five-year cycle would encourage them to keep investing in this talent, while a three-year cycle risks losing nurtured players to rivals.

The IPL had two four-year gaps between mega auctions in the past decade. The first was in 2018, when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals returned after a two-year suspension.

The 2021 auction was delayed by a year due to the pandemic. In both cases, franchises extended player contracts by a year.
