Biker Overcomes Eating Disorder Exclusion to Secure Olympics Spot.

New Zealand mountain biker Sammie Maxwell has successfully appealed her exclusion from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

A tribunal found that selectors had used incorrect medical evidence about her eating disorder to make their decision.

Sammie Maxwell, 22, was initially denied a spot at the 2024 Olympics by Cycling New Zealand's (CNZ) nominations panel, despite earning a quota spot. The panel claimed she hadn't proven she was free from any mental or physical impairment due to her long-term eating disorder.

Maxwell appealed the decision, and the New Zealand Sports Tribunal found that CNZ had based their exclusion on outdated medical evidence.

The tribunal determined that Ryan Hollows, CNZ's high-performance director, had submitted a biased report that unfairly influenced the panel's decision.

The tribunal stated that assuming an athlete must have a mental or physical impairment solely because of an eating disorder sets a harmful and unjust precedent.
