Iranian sport protests hijab laws
Iran’s national basketball team has joined the nationwide protestsagainsthijab
laws, by refusing to sing the national anthem at the qualifier matches for the
FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The protests have erupted in response to the
death of MahsaAmini, who was detained for wearing her headscarf
inappropriately.
The Iranian national water polo team have also protested in
a similar way at the Asian Championship, amid a nationwide crackdown by police
that has included a ban on non-state media and communication channels. Unverified
claims suggest that a total of about 300 protesters have been killed so far.
The sports protests have now spread to various disciplines, with the Iranian
beach soccer players skipping on singing the national anthem at the Emirates
Intercontinental Beach Soccer Cup, with winning goalscorer Saeed Piramoon
cutting off his hair in protest.
Iranian archer ParidaGhasemi also voiced her
protest by removing her hijab during an awards ceremony, for which she won
praise. Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi also competed without a hijab about a
month ago. However, both women have gone on record to say that the instances
were accidents and unintentional. Human rights activists have called it forced
confessions extracted by the government.
