A 1 run defeat in a test match is surely going to hurt sorely for any team. Such a scenario played out in a low scoring test match in the australian summer of 1992-1993.
In the 4th test match played at adelaide, bowlers dominated almost the entire test match with some stellar bowling performances from Curtly Ambrose, Tim May and Merv Hughes. Chasing a tough but achievable target of 186 runs to win the test match, the australians were miserly left short of just one run!!!
What added to the excitement of the match was the consistent see-saw fluctuations in the match,. Chasing the target, the australians were precariously placed at 144 for 9, with only the absolute tail at the crease in the form of Tim May and Craig McDermott. With 42 runs to win, the outcome seemed to be a foregone conclusion. But, lady luck and destiny had different plans for both the teams.
Both the tail enders fought bravely to bring the target to just 2 runs, bravely facing and counter attacking the fast bowling barrage of the west indians. A seemingly impossible situation had tuned on its head for the australians and a seemingly hard fought and miraculous victory seemed a near certainty.
But Courney Walsh and destiny had other plans. A snorter from Walsh got McDermott to nick to the wicketkeeper and cause severe heartbreak for the australians and joy for the west indians.
That is test cricket at its full thrill and excitement for you!!!!!
