Uncertain if Olympics Will Evolve into a Major Sporting Event.

Rory McIlroy thinks it’s hard to predict if winning an Olympic gold medal in golf will ever match the prestige of winning one of the sport’s four major championships.

Rory McIlroy, representing Team Ireland alongside Shane Lowry, will compete in his second Olympic Games at Paris 2024.

The four-day, 72-hole competition begins at Le Golf National. McIlroy told BBC Sport NI that as the Olympics become more integrated into golf, their significance might grow, but it’s uncertain if they will ever rival the four majors.

He noted, "It's hard to say if the Olympics will become like a major. Even this week, not all the top players are here due to the qualification system. For a prestigious win, you’d expect to see all the best players, which isn’t quite the case now."

Despite this, McIlroy believes a medal, especially gold, would be highly meaningful to him. He finished fourth in the individual event at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
