Root Reflects: 'Maybe We Shouldn't Have Gone' - Insights on the 2021-22 Ashes.

Former captain Joe Root admits that England "arguably" should not have embarked on the last Ashes tour of Australia due to the Covid restrictions in place.

Much of the lead-up to the 2021-22 series, which England lost 4-0, focused on the strict conditions imposed on the tourists.

Australia captain Pat Cummins and then England head coach Chris Silverwood both missed Tests due to isolation, and the fifth Test was relocated from Perth to Hobart.

Reflecting on the tour, Root, 33, remarked, "Thinking of Covid, it was about keeping the lights on last time we went. Arguably we shouldn’t have gone last time, should we in retrospect?"

Australia had some of the strictest Covid regulations in the world during much of the pandemic. Former England pace bowler Stuart Broad later labeled the series "void," while Australian seamer Mitchell Starc questioned whether the conditions were an "excuse" for England's heavy loss.

Australia retained the Ashes in the UK last summer with a 2-2 series draw.
