Managing 22 Players on the Field Is Remarkable.

Gbemisola Yusuf is a force to be reckoned with on the football field.

At just 21 years old, she’s breaking boundaries as a referee in Nigeria, showcasing her impressive knack for taking charge of the game.

“Managing 22 players on the field is incredible,” Yusuf shared with BBC Sport Africa from the Maracana pitch in Ajegunle-Lagos.

Yusuf stands out in Nigeria as one of the few female referees, highlighting a broader issue of underrepresentation for women in officiating roles globally.

Although the number of female referees in Africa has risen, with 53 African women listed by FIFA as of 2023, women still make up a small fraction of referees worldwide.

Efforts by organizations like the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and national bodies have been instrumental in increasing gender diversity.

South Africa and Morocco are leading the way with a higher proportion of female referees at top levels.
