Daniil Medvedev’s humility
Daniil Medvedev, who has qualified in two consecutive ATP
Finals, has declared that will never call himself the favourite to win a
tournament, as he believes that it can bring him bad luck. The 26-year-old is
known to deflect questions on whether he thinks he will win, and instead
focuses on hoping that he can perform to his best abilities. Apart from Carlos
Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, Medvedev is expected to face tough competition at
the ATP Finals, from the biggest players in tennis today, including Rafael
Nadal.
In the group stage, he is also set to face Novak Djokovic,
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev. According to Medvedev, the tournament is
high-octane as it involves training and playing matches against rivals from the
first day, in addition to training with hitting partners. He has also revealed
how players look forward to the groups being announced, so that they may know
who is in their group and subsequently practice with opponents from other
groups. Medvedev, who has described the energy of the tournament as “special” is
hoping to play his best tennis and is feeling confident. However, in his trademark
humble way, he has been reluctant to predict any results, and has said that he
will wait till his first performance to gauge his chances in the tournament.
