Van Rouwendaal Triumphs with Gold in Grueling 10km Marathon Swim.

Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands secured gold in the women’s 10km marathon swim with a late surge in the River Seine.

Sharon van Rouwendaal, the 2016 Olympic champion, narrowly missed gold in Tokyo 2021, finishing just 0.9 seconds behind.

In the 10km marathon swim, the 30-year-old made a late push to overtake Australia's Moesha Johnson, who led most of the race.

Van Rouwendaal won in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 34.2 seconds, with Johnson finishing 5.5 seconds behind for silver. Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci took bronze, while Leah Crisp from Great Britain placed 20th.

Earlier, concerns about water quality in the Seine had led to the cancellation of the marathon swimming familiarization session. Tests on Wednesday confirmed the water was safe, allowing Thursday's race to proceed.

Water quality in the Seine has been a significant issue leading up to Paris 2024, even causing the postponement of the men’s triathlon.
