The United States took a strong 3-1 lead over Europe in the opening session of Friday's Solheim Cup in Virginia.
Denmark's Emily Pedersen and Sweden's Maja Stark earned Europe’s only point with a tense win that went all the way to the 18th hole, despite their early four-shot lead after five holes.
By then, the US had already raced to a 3-0 lead, securing all their matches with 3&2 victories on the 16th hole as European players missed strikingly similar putts.
"It was an awesome morning," said US captain Stacy Lewis, who also led her team to last year’s dramatic 14-14 tie in Spain.
