US captain Stacy Lewis wishes she had 12 players like Lexi Thompson as the team seeks their first Solheim Cup win since 2017.
Lexi Thompson, a major figure in women’s golf for the past decade, is one of US captain Stacy Lewis’ three wildcard picks for the Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, starting Friday.
At 29, Thompson is making her seventh and final appearance after announcing her retirement from full-time golf.
Lewis, who has played alongside Thompson in three previous Solheim Cups, says Thompson has become the face of the event.
"Her legacy is tied to the Solheim Cup," Lewis said. "Her energy with the fans and her excitement for the event make it uniquely hers. She plays her best golf here and is determined to win. I wish I had 12 of her."
Thompson, a 15-time winner since turning professional in 2010, claimed her only major title at the 2014 Chevron Championship.
In Solheim Cup history, she has earned 12½ points from 23 matches, including three of four points in last year's 14-14 draw in Spain, which allowed Europe to retain the trophy.
