Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer has passed away following a severe head injury sustained at the Road and Para-cycling World Championships in Switzerland.
The 18-year-old crashed during the junior road race on Thursday and was airlifted to the hospital.
In a statement about the 'tragic' news, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) expressed, 'With Muriel Furrer’s passing, the international cycling community loses a talented rider with a promising future.'
The UCI and the organizing committee for the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling World Championships extended their heartfelt condolences to Furrer’s family, friends, and Swiss Cycling.
Furrer’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Swiss Cycling shared on X: 'Our hearts are broken. It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Muriel Furrer, a warm-hearted young woman who always wore a smile. We can only feel pain and sadness.'
The Zurich 2024 Local Organising Committee also stated they were 'extremely concerned' about Furrer’s condition earlier on Friday.
