Gary Wilson secured a hard-fought 10-8 win against Mark Selby, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Tour Championship held in Manchester.
In his debut at the Tour Championship in Manchester, 38-year-old Gary Wilson claimed a tense 10-8 victory over four-time world champion Mark Selby.
Wilson led the match 5-3 overnight, then extended his lead to 7-4 and 8-6. Although Selby fought back to win the 15th frame, Wilson ultimately secured the win by taking two of the next three frames.
Wilson's next opponent will be China's Zhang Anda on Wednesday at 13:00 BST.
In another match, Ali Carter dominated his first-round encounter against Barry Hawkins, establishing a commanding 7-1 lead in the opening session.
Although Hawkins started well with a break of 84 to win the opening frame, Carter took control with strong play and capitalized on his opponent's mistakes.
Carter, aged 44 and a finalist at the Wuhan Open and the Masters this season, showcased his skill with four half-centuries and a remarkable 135 break as he surged ahead. He now needs just three more frames to set up a quarter-final clash with world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan, a match that promises to be intense given their history.
