Frances Tiafoe secured a US Open semi-final spot against Taylor Fritz, ensuring that an American man will reach the singles final in New York for the first time in 18 years.
Andy Roddick was the last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title, triumphing at Flushing Meadows in 2003. He was also the last American to reach a US Open final, losing to Roger Federer in 2006.
The wait for an American finalist is set to end, as Taylor Fritz overcame his quarter-final jinx by defeating Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Frances Tiafoe advanced to the semi-finals when Grigor Dimitrov retired due to a hamstring injury. Tiafoe was leading 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 4-1 at the time of the retirement.
"I didn’t want it to end this way for either of us or the crowd," said Tiafoe. "But Friday will be an amazing day. It's the biggest match of both Taylor's and my careers."
