American Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas was narrowly defeated by Brittany Brown at the inaugural Athlos NYC, where many of the world's leading female track athletes vied for record prize money.
Thomas, a three-time gold medalist at Paris 2024, finished with a time of 22.21 seconds but was edged out by Olympic bronze medalist Brittany Brown, who clocked 22.18 seconds.
Among the winners at the women-only track invitational were Faith Kipyegon, the Kenyan 1500m world record holder, and Marileidy Paulino, the Olympic 400m champion, both of whom received $60,000 (£44,900).
The event was launched by Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband of tennis legend Serena Williams, featuring a record $500,000 (£374,000) prize pool for a women's track meet.
