Jannik Sinner expressed his "surprise" at the World Anti-Doping Agency's appeal against the ruling that cleared him of any wrongdoing after he tested positive for a banned substance twice.
WADA announced that last month's decision by an independent tribunal to exonerate the Italian player was "not correct under the applicable rules." They have since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), suggesting that Sinner should face a ban of "one to two years."
At 23, Sinner expressed his disappointment, stating, "I’m obviously very disappointed and surprised by this appeal, especially since we had three hearings, all of which concluded positively for me."
The unexpected twist in this case adds more drama to an already intense saga surrounding the young athlete’s career.
