World number one Jannik Sinner played some of his best tennis at the US Open to defeat Tommy Paul and secure a thrilling quarter-final matchup with Daniil Medvedev.
Italy's Jannik Sinner defeated Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in a lively night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Earlier, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, made a strong statement with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Portugal's Nuno Borges.
Sinner and Medvedev are the only Grand Slam champions left in the men’s singles draw. Sinner overcame a two-set deficit to win the Australian Open against Medvedev in January. He has won five of their last six meetings, though Medvedev triumphed in their Wimbledon quarter-final in July.
Sinner initially struggled with errors but adjusted his game to overpower Paul from the baseline.
After falling behind 14th seed Paul by a double break in the first set, Sinner came back to win three consecutive games and take control in the tie-break.
